Human Values

Human Values

Human values: Values are beliefs that have an inherent worth in usefulness or importance to the holder," or "principles, standards, or qualities reflected worthwhile or desirable.” Values institute an important characteristic of self-concept and serve as supervisory principles for person. In literature, it is documented that values are so indissolubly woven into human language, thought and behaviour patterns that they have fascinated philosophers for millennia.

Human values are necessity in today’s society and business world. Human values are the features that guide people to take into account the human element when one interacts with other human. They have many positive characters that create bonds of humanity between people and thus have value for all human beings. They are strong positive feelings for the human essence of the other.

These human values have the effect of bonding, comforting, reassuring and procuring serenity. Human values are the basis for any practical life within society. They build space for a drive, a movement towards one another, which leads to peace. In simple term, human values are described as universal and are shared by all human beings, whatever their religion, their nationality, their culture, and their personal history. By nature, they persuade consideration for others.

Common human values are as under:

Brotherhood, friendship, empathy, compassion, and love.
Openness, listening, welcoming, acceptance, recognition, and appreciation.
Honesty, fairness, loyalty, sharing, and solidarity.
Civility, respect, and consideration.

Honesty: Honesty is also vital human values. Presently, adopting an honest approach can often feel intimidating and impossible, but people fail to realize is that it is not the act of simply telling the truth that makes someone honest rather the quality of person who is being honest. An honest person is often straight, upright, sincere and fair and being an honest person brings more reward to the soul than the damage a lie could do.

Love: The presence of love in human life, the love they have for their families, friends, our faith and for themselves is important source of energy to lead smooth life.

Respect: Respect is a feeling of deep esteem for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements.

Faith: Faith is complete trust or confidence in someone or something.

Beauty: Beauty is something that has really been spoiled by human society. The way we think about something that is beautiful is judged on a purely physical response, but the true meaning of beauty is being in balance and harmony with nature. Many researchers would argue that beauty is not a human value and, although beauty is a subjective experience, when they analyse what a subject of beauty is, it becomes anything that resonates with personal meaning, not just emotion. The prominence of this Human Value is clear when people think about the things that bring meaning into their life such as family and friends, these things become beautiful in a greater sense.

Trust: Trust can be understood in many ways, but finally it comes down to reliability and truth. Without trust, the world simply would not function.

Integrity: As a human value, integrity is imperative that people stand spiritually undivided and hold true to our integrity, the importance of which is often forgotten.

Wisdom: Wisdom is also significant human value in many ways; under-appreciated in its importance, in its value in our lives and in its true meaning. Wisdom is also very often confused with words like knowledge or intelligence but the word wisdom is defined as the quality of having experience and good judgment and the resulting soundness of that action or decision.

A value system is a continuing organization of beliefs concerning preferable modes of conduct along a continuum of importance. Therefore the importance of different values co-varies with the importance of others in the value system.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic value:
An intrinsic value is a value that one has of itself, independently of other things, including its context. An extrinsic value is a property that depends on a thing’s relationship with other things. Extrinsic value is the value, which depends on how much it generates intrinsic value.

The reason that things have extrinsic value is because they themselves lead to happiness or pleasure or they lead to a series of other things that eventually lead to happiness. Pleasure (Intrinsic Value) is the ultimate end to which all things of extrinsic value are the means.

Need of human values:
Value education is always essential to shape one’s life and to give one an opportunity of performing on the global stage. The need for value education among the parents, children, teachers etc, is constantly increasing as we continue to witness increasing violent activities, behavioural disorders and lack of unity in the society etc. Value education enables us to understand our needs and visualize our goals correctly and also indicate the direction for their fulfilment. It also helps remove our confusions and contradictions and enables us to rightly utilize the technological innovations.

Science and technology (S&T)

Science and technology (S&T)

Science: Investigations of the physical world, including us and the stuff we make

Technology: Making stuff, including stuff used by society, and in the production and dissemination of science

Society: The sum total of our interactions as humans, including the interactions that we engage in to figure things out and to make things

It should be clear that all of these are deeply interconnected. As this class proceeds, we will begin to develop a better picture of the fundamental nature of this interconnection.

Science and technology (S&T) is widely recognised as an important tool for fostering and strengthening the economic and social development of the country. India has made significant progress in various spheres of science and technology over the years and can now take pride in having a strong network of S&T institutions, trained manpower and an innovative knowledge base. Given the rapid pace of globalisation, fast-depleting material resources, increasing competition among nations and the growing need to protect intellectual property, the importance of strengthening the knowledge base is an important issue that needs to be recognised during the Tenth Plan.

Recognising the global economic order, the focus of the Tenth Plan in the science and technology sector would be to: strengthen application-oriented research and development (R&D) for technology generation; promote human resource development, especially in terms of encouraging bright students to take up science as a career; encourage research in and application of S&T for forecasting, prevention and mitigation of natural hazards; integrate the developments in science and technology with all spheres of national activities; and harness S&T for improving livelihood, employment generation; environment protection and ecological security.

activity without limits. During the Tenth Plan, massive support would be provided to basic research, especially in universities, so that India can contribute significantly towards advancing that frontier

While building on the comparative advantage that India possess in the emerging areas of information technology (IT) and biotechnology, special attention would be given to agriculture and agro-based industries and infrastructure sectors like energy, transportation, communication and housing. S&T concerns will be integrated into various policies and programmes covering the economic, energy, environmental and other socio-economic sectors.

This integration will be reflected in the identification of technological choices, the investments and the S&T interventions in the individual sectors. The approach will be to make S&T an essential component in the Plans and programmes of development sectors.

The Significance of a Positive Attitude

The Significance of a Positive Attitude

A positive attitude makes you a happier and more successful family member, student, employee, and citizen. Monkey Business Images/Shutterstock

Positive Attitude Your attitude will have a direct impact on your performance. You can choose the attitude that you take into a match (or your everyday life). This document will help you to make choices regarding your attitude and the impact this will have on your performance and wellbeing.

It’s important to remember we always have choices in life. We can choose to look at life negatively and see the dark side of situations, or we can choose to be positive and live a happy and fulfilling life. Here are some

suggestions on how to do that:

• Rather than living your life on autopilot, make a conscious effort to fill your mind with positive thoughts.
• Keep a journal and at the end of the day write down all the good things that happened to you.
• Find something positive to say about everyone you meet.
• Use positive words and phrases in your internal dialogue with yourself and in spoken conversations with
others. Talk about what works rather than what doesn’t.
• Take action even if you aren’t certain things will go well. When you challenge your fears, you build selfconfidence. If things don’t go well, look at the situation as a learning experience.
• Find reasons to smile more often. And if you don’t have a reason to smile, try smiling anyway.
• Surround yourself with other positive people.
• Read inspiring stories and quotes.
• Learn to be more conscious of your thoughts through meditation and concentration exercises.
• Be appreciative of all that is good in your life.

Developing a positive attitude

Your attitude plays a huge part in how you look at life. It affects how you see things around you and how you handle situations. You can’t control what happens to you. But you can control your attitude. Following the tips below can help you have a more positive attitude!

Your attitude is up to you. We can be our worst enemies when it comes to having a positive attitude. If you don’t think you deserve to be successful, you never will be. If you think you can’t do something, you’ll be right. The good news is that with a little effort, you can change a negative attitude into a positive one. But the only person who can change your attitude is you.

Rise and shine! Get up a bit earlier and take a short walk. Fifteen minutes in the fresh air is a great way to lift your spirits. It helps you prepare to make the most of your day.

Stop a bad day in its tracks. Just because you woke up on the wrong side of the bed  doesn’t mean your day is ruined. Don’t let it set the tone for the rest of the day. Take a moment to think about something good that could happen to gain a positive outlook. Remember, when things aren’t going well, tomorrow is a brand new day.

Build positive friendships. It’s hard to maintain a positive attitude when your friends or co-workers have negative ones. Rarely will you see a positive person in a group of negative people. Negativity spreads. So avoid negative people or situations.

Enjoy a hobby. It’s good to have a hobby or enjoyable activity that you can fall back on when things get tough or you’ve had a hard day. Most hobbies allow you to relax and forget about the day’s routine
.
Get out of your rut. If you feel like something is missing from your life, you may just need to add something to it! Try something new. Learn a new sport. Take a cooking class. Doing something different is a great attitude pick-me-up.

Be good to yourself. You can be your own best friend or your own worst enemy. Make sure you eat well and get enough rest. Stress and bad health habits are enough to give anyone a bad attitude.

Look at the bigger picture. One of the best ways to change your attitude is to take a reality check. Is your life really so bad? Look around you and chances are you’ll find someone who is worse off than you. Look at the things you can be grateful for and your attitude will change for the better.

Ask for a helping hand. If you are trying to improve your attitude, ask a friend or family member to tell you when you’re slipping back into your old habits. A reminder to look on the bright side may be all you need.

What is Learning?

What is Learning?

The word learning is used routinely in discussions about teaching in higher education, so it’s important to clarify what we are referring to when we talk about learning. Educational researchers agree that learning is much deeper than memorization and information recall. Deep and long-lasting learning involves understanding, relating ideas and making connections between prior and new knowledge, independent and critical thinking and ability to transfer knowledge to new and different contexts.

“A process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential of improved performance and future learning.” From How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching by Susan Ambrose, et al.

“Acquiring knowledge and skills and having them readily available from memory so you can make sense of future problems and opportunities.” (Listen to an interview with one of the authors.) From Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III, Mark A. McDaniel

“It has been suggested that the term learning defies precise definition because it is put to multiple uses. Learning is used to refer to (1) the acquisition and mastery of what is already known about something, (2) the extension and clarification of meaning of one’s experience, or (3) an organized, intentional process of testing ideas relevant to problems. In other words, it is used to describe a product, a process, or a function.” –From Learning How to Learn: Applied Theory for Adults by R.M. Smith

“Learning is the relatively permanent change in a person’s knowledge or behavior due to experience. This definition has three components: 1) the duration of the change is long-term rather than short-term; 2) the locus of the change is the content and structure of knowledge in memory or the behavior of the learner; 3) the cause of the change is the learner’s experience in the environment rather than fatigue, motivation, drugs, physical condition or physiologic intervention.” –From Learning in Encyclopedia of Educational Research, Richard E. Mayer

“A change in human disposition or capability that persists over a period of time and is not simply ascribable to processes of growth.” — From The Conditions of Learning by Robert Gagne

Personality Development- Behavioural Tips

Personality Development- Behavioural Tips

Be Good: It is vital not just to pretend to be a helpful person; you genuinely have to do that to be that person. For instance, you realized that someone is in need, you can guide and say that I feel if you go to that person, he can be of help to you. Or you can give small piece of advice. Satisfactions that you get after helping someone is amazing, and believe me that will reflect on your face and personality development.

Do you really need to change: Come let’s understand when it’s time for you to change? Suppose, you are talking with someone and that person, is nodding but not interested in you or your topic! The person is looking at his watch while speaking to you. The person, suddenly hop on to some other person and speak for hours with that person. There is sudden silence in the room as soon, as you enter. So, come out of your cocoon and see the world with unbiased eyes. Soon, you will realize that you need to adapt to new environment.

Work on Inner beauty: We all work on external appearance, but when you speak everything get reflected, weather you are arrogant, dominating, self-centered or not concerned. From your actions and way to behave and speak it all gets reflected. So make sure that you work on your inner beauty or personality. As to have a great look it takes you just couple of months, but to have a great personality development you need to work for years to develop that aura and confidence which will make you “a complete man”.

Are you in self-doubt: Many a times people are genuine, they know how to carry themselves, but they lack in their confidence levels they cannot express themselves properly. They have fear in them; am I speaking right or no! What will people think about me, are they making fun of me? Such questions of self-doubt suddenly take you on the back foot. The fact is many times these people know a lot more than the people who are speaking. It is just they have fear of audience.

Work on your confidence level: Well you need to develop a carefree attitude, be confident, you need to think, people will speak negative about you as they are jealous of you, or they don’t want you to become the center of attraction. Another thing is that you can be with your friends and publish start speaking, develop the habit of participation and speak in the discussion going on. Speak less but speak relevant. So that you gain confidence and people around will understand that you can also speak and can give your own advice.

Learn from Mistakes: If you are learning any new thing, you are bound to make mistakes, be prepared to say sorry and apologies genuinely. By saying sorry you are able to make a respectful corner among your friends and colleagues. Learn from your mistakes, forgive yourself and move on. Do not stop until you have learned from your mistakes. This may take you years to learn and that is fine, at least you are learning and trying your best. You are thousand times better than the people never try and are timid to confront their introvert personality.

Evaluation (Others feedback): Keep on evaluating yourself at regular intervals. Sometime you will get feedback from your peers like, woo, I didn’t knew you negotiate so well, or you can discuss matters so well. Hey how could you solve that problem so easily? If such feedbacks are coming your way, this means that you are on the right track. And improving gradually. But In case you are not getting feedbacks, than its time to have another mechanism for you to have your evaluation done.

Self – Evaluation: For this start maintaining notes about the personality traits that you need to work upon. Like public speaking, boosting confidence, pleasant personality, helpful nature, socialize, dressing sense and likewise. You need to find out what is it that you need to work on first. Jot them on paper with date and search what is best way to learn that skill. Check for google, if don’t have an alter ego, or mentor of yours. From google you will get tips what you need to do first. Take one trait for improvement at a time, excel in it and then move ahead.

Develop your network and Socialize: Today is the age of networking, be social with people, you should often go for outings with friends, you will have self-knowledge about things and develop confidence to travel independently. Secondly, with your network, you know how to speak and interact, when to take credit of yourself and when to share and help. When and how to say no without hurting, you will learn all these basic things when you are with people around.

Imitate: If you know of someone who is fantastic in team building and have great personality, observe that person by heart, try to be that person most of times to learn from him, how he does such things, the more time you spend in observing and learning more you understand about his positive and negative points. You need to adopt only the best qualities and not the negative ones. There is no harm in learning from your idol. At times we can have two or more idols with whom we can stay and learn.

Adaptive: You can only learn when you are adaptive, if you are rigid with your though process than it is next to impossible to learn new things and personality development.
Fun Loving: Always working for targets and remaining a serious and boring kind of a person is never able to develop fan club of his own, you need to be fun loving, add some humour while serious discussion is going on, this will break the monotonous routine in the room, and burst the stress balloon as well. But do it in controlled and acceptable manner.

Time Management: It is crucial to stick to your time this will help you in prioritizing things also to take the decisions what to do when and how, to say no and where to schedule what. With time management you will learn to know what your priorities are, scheduling, this reflects better team management qualities and you will be in a position to lead. But first manage self and then you can manage your team well.

Courageous: Take a stand for your decision is a good quality but you need to learn how to express your thoughts and decisions. The win-win solution is the best approach however, there are situations when you are bound to take stringent decisions, the courage is to stick to those plans but the smartness is when you can handle it smoothly when convincing all the stakeholders involved so that there is minimum dismal in the environment.
Great host: It does not matter that the party is hosted by you or not, important is to show concern by asking people around like: you should have some snacks, that one is good, have some water you are dancing from long. I am going to get some food, are you coming along.

Complement others: If you see someone is looking great it is always good to compliment them, they will love you for that. It’s not only about dress this is valid for their exceptional victory, speech or any other quality which you admire the most.

Read: A habit of reading will fetch wonders in your personality. The changes for which you have been trying hard will come automatically within you. It will transform you from within and will help you evoking your inner hidden strengths, from which you yourself were unaware till date. Further reading helps you to do introspection about yourself and when you have the habit of daily introspection, chances are you will evolve as a better human and will lead to personality development with time and regular practice.

ENLIGHTEN YOURSELF

ENLIGHTEN YOURSELF

Is Enlightenment a personal matter? No, when you think about Enlightenment, it is important that you include other people in that idea. Transcendence will be yours when you begin to accept responsibility for the condition of the whole human race. When you give yourself up in unconditional surrender, automatically you rise up beyond the limited perspective. You come upon an infinitely greater perspective in which all questions disappear.

The by-product of Enlightenment is that you cease to suffer the way you suffered in the past. If you feel disturbed by all the conflict and suffering that you see in the world but are unwilling to come to the end of conflict within yourself, then you can be sure that you are not serious.

And what is the reason for all spiritual experiences? Evolution. The true value of profound spiritual experience lies in the discovery of fundamental trust.

Full realisation is the evolutionary leap to which all spiritual experiences ultimately lead.

In deep spiritual experience, a human being realises a profound trust is found, so that you can liberate yourself from tendencies towards aggression and permanently destroy the illusion of separation that those tendencies arise from.

The result of this discovery is a level of integrity that is deep and profound and that manifests consistently at all levels of human expression. If the evolutionary leap is to take place, then the final outcome of true spiritual experience must result in this kind of purity.
